The state of journalism being what it is, it’s no surprise that major media outlets would prefer to read last rites to rock and roll rather than put boots on the ground to find examples of its continuing rude health. Today’s “Exhibit A” comes from Levitation Room, a fine avatar of the continuing appeal of psych rock. Fans like me have been waiting a while for a follow up to 2019’s excellent Headspace, about which I said, “The difference in this aptly-named L.A. quintet's take on psychedelia lies in their light touch. There's plenty of guitar fireworks, but there's still a crisp elegance to everything they do.”
But now Strange Weather is on its way and the latest single, Revelations, has me more excited than ever for February 16th. One reason for that is the slightly heavier touch they’re now employing, with smoking hot guitar, pulsating bass, and drums that drive hard but keep in clean. Wed that to soaring vocals, a catchy chorus (“Oooh, revelations…”), and a spacey breakdown in the middle and you’ve got a winner in my book.
Levitation Room will be on the road this winter and spring, but I’m still waiting for east coast dates so I can enact the last three lines of Revelations in person:
Cue the lights and let myself be
Cue the lights and set myself free
Cue the lights and let myself breathe
Already a fan of Levitation Room? Or are they new to you? Let me know!
