Not a lot to say about this album as I was premiering most of it in the air on the way back from visiting family in Colorado. The air filtration and engine noise of an Airbus A240 create a formidable challenge for listening to music. But Triple Seven, the debut from Indianapolis indie rockers Wishy, was more than up to it.
Main characters Kevin Krauter and Nina Pitchkites have been around a few blocks so don’t feel jealous if your new band doesn’t sound this assured. Even the structure of the album - ten songs in 40 minutes - has a touch of mastery. Abetted by guitarist Dimitri Morris, bassist Mitch Collins, and drummer Conner Host, the sound is shiny and crunchy, and the songs are instantly satisfying but also distinctive, creating a “Wishy sound” right out of the gate.
Exhibit “A” for this exercise is the closing track, Spit, which kicks off with a quick guitar and hi-hat fanfare before slamming into a churning groove, the drums pushing against the riffing in a way that had me dancing in Seat 12E. Apologies to my fellow passengers. Press play and see if you don’t have a similar experience.
Amidst all the swirling guitars and soaring melodies, Krauter and Pitchkite do not neglect the lyrics, with sharp phrases jumping out of the vortex, as when Krauter sings:
So promise me
Just one more time
Those honesties left at the bedside
Won’t fade too fast, no way to make the good times last
You can extend Triple Seven’s many good times by playing it again. Just another way that music is magic.
Did I introduce you to Wishy? Or am I just catching up with you?
